'Mindfulness' has become a bit of a buzz word in recent years and there are mountains of books, apps and on-line courses using the term. So how to choose?

Unlike many other approaches on offer, the MBSR (Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction) programme is the longest established and best researched of all.

It is a completely secular programme, is available to all faiths and none, and has been described as a coming together of Western science and the contemplative, traditions that have existed for millenia. 


In 1979, Jon Kabat-Zinn, Professor of Medicine Emeritus at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, developed the 8 week Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) programme to help people with chronic health problems, such as anxiety and pain control. The programme includes Mindfulness of Breath exercises, Mindful Movement based on Hatha Yoga and Body Scan meditations.

Since the early 1990's, Bangor University has worked closely with Massachusetts in training people to teach MBSR. It has been instrumental in further developing the course to offer MBCT (Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy for recurrent depression) and other forms including Cancer Recovery, Addiction, Carers and Parenting. Other universities followed including Oxford and Exeter.

In the last three decades, Mindfulness Based Programmes (MBP's) such as MBSR have spread throughout the Western World including USA, Canada, Australia and Europe.

In October 2015 t​he 'Mindful Nation UK Report' from the Mindfulness All-Party Parliamentary Group (MAAPG) recommended expanding Mindfulness into health, education, the workplace and the criminal justice system. Along the way, more than a hundred MPs and members of the House of Lords have taken part in a mindfulness programme in Parliament.
